The Sustainability Thinker: Our Social Media Intern Reflects on BeachCorps

One of our BeachCorps Social Media Specialists Julianna left these deep parting “Sustainability Thinker” thoughts!

“My time at BeachCorps has allowed me to dive deeper into the environmental and ethical issues surrounding both tourism and volunteering abroad. Over the course of 5-months BeachCorps has taught me so much about how important it is to make a positive impact. The BeachCorps’ motto is “a little grain of sand”, and this is because a little grain of sand in the wrong place can do a lot of harm, but when its placed carefully it can create something beautiful. Our saying highlights all that BeachCorps embodies. We must be conscious with our actions and see how they impact others.

I had never heard of the term “toxic charity” before working with BeachCorps. I have learned that giving back must be a mindful and conscious action, there are so many variables that must be understood to ensure an action has a positive outcome.  Respect for the communities we want to help is the most important aspect of volunteering consciously. All the decisions made while giving back have a everlasting impact on communities. BeachCorps has taken the time and effort to fully analyze how our volunteering impacts the communities. BeachCorps makes sure that the long term outcomes of these efforts are truly positive and empowering for the communities.  We must make sure we are leaving our little grain of sand in the right places. This is the BeachCorps anti-toxic charity model that I love so much. It is different than most volunteer vacations. BeachCorps strives to empower the people we are helping and give them what they need to flourish.

I am so happy that I was lucky enough to have worked with BeachCorps. There is nothing I love more than promoting a company that I truly believe in. I can honestly sayas that BeachCorps and I share the same moral ethics, and that is something I am so proud to have been a part of. I have learned so much during my time with BeachCorps and I know that I will carry this knowledge into my future career and life in general. Thank you again BeachCorps for everything you have taught me!”

We were so happy to have you working for us too, Julianna! Tell all your friends about our amazing summer internships!
